Chamber Music, Classical period, c. 1750 - 1825

The 83 string quartets (of which seven are single-movement arrangements of orchestral pieces titled The Seven Words of Our Saviour on the Cross and known as The Seven Last Words) by Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) constitute a series in which virtually the entire history of the string quartet is represented.
